Summer Haze aka Volcanic Pizza - fractal art quilt
© Rose Rushbrooke 2002
14" square
Pattern: Original fractal design.
Medium: Hand dyed and printed cotton fabric, and polyester silk.
Technique: Hand appliquéd, embroidered, embellished, beaded and quilted.
Price: $800.00
The centrepiece of the Mandelbrot Lake pulls the eye up and into its depths, and flows down the sides of the bright summer gladioli colours into ripples of gold lava. Long strands of floss and glass beads give a hazy, hot air effect. The little bitty embellishments look like the topping on a pizza so I have placed the work on figurative pizza dough.
Techniques used in this piece:
- all the pieces are hand appliquéd one on top of the other except for the centre Mandelbrot Lake which is reverse appliquéd
- the background gold fabric is furrowed by stitching down with glass beads and floss;
- the edges are hand embroidered with floss;
- silk ribbon is hand embroidered using French knots and loop stitch;
- glass beads outline the turquoise area;
- hand quilted;
- the border is stuffed to represent the pizza dough.
