Pattern: Original design using fractal and graphic computer software.
Materials: Hand dyed and printed cotton fabric.
Technique: Hand appliquéd, embroidered, beaded and quilted.

A fractal is a mathematically generated pattern repeated at every scale. Here you see the Mandelbrot Lake duplicated several times. Ultimately giving the disturbing impression of a huge, staring eye.

Many techniques are used in this piece.

  • Corded trapunto for the blue background.
  • Stuffed trapunto for sections of the yellow background.
  • The stripes on the binding are stippled with a permanent marker as is the shadow under the eye.
  • Bugle beads have been stitched around the circles.
  • The edge of the Mandelbrot Set has been embroidered with silk ribbon French knots.
