My husband and his sister walked down to the lake behind our house. They stood on the dock and looked out over the gorgeous view. There was a ripple below and they looked down to see a huge water moccasin gliding beneath them. I am sure neither of them have come home so quickly before!

This piece was begun at a workshop given by Ruth McDowell at the Museum of American Quilters Society in Paducah, Kentucky. It was pieced using the techniques for which she is well known.

The red cardinal sitting on one of the poles is hand embroidered.

Techniques used in this piece:

  • hand and machine pieced;
  • hand embroidered;
  • machine quilted.
