Fractal Art Quilts installed at Science Museum of Virginia
Aldie, Va. - June 10, 2005. Rose Rushbrooke's fractal art quilts can be seen through the summer at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond. Her work was selected for exhibition by the Science Museum's Art Program committee.
One of the goals of the Science Museum of Virginia art program is to help develop the link between art and science; and is dedicated to bringing high quality art into the museum.
Says Rushbrooke: "The relationship between nature, mathematics and mankind's subconscious is curious and historic. Many early masters used fractal elements in their artwork long before the phenomenon was discovered by Benoit Mandelbrot. Many of Jackson Pollock's paintings are considered fractal in construction."
Rushbrooke's pieces follow the basic principles of quiltmaking: a batting sandwiched between backing and a pieced and/or appliquéd top, the three layers quilted. The larger finished quilts can be enjoyed as artwork hung on the wall. The smaller pieces are mounted on fabric covered frames and ready for hanging.
Her fractal art quilts have been awarded cash and other recognition in many shows throughout the US and England. They have been included in a textile database developed by the Textiles Department of the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.
Rushbrooke's quilts vary greatly in size - from tiny to seven feet wide. She lectures on the topic of quilting and designing fractals for textiles and can be reached at 703-327-2482.
