Award-Winning Aldie Artist Rose Rushbrooke on TV Dec. 27, 2004
Aldie, Va. - Dec. 15, 2004. On Dec. 27, at 8:30 a.m., Home & Garden Television (HGTV) will air a show, "Simply Quilts" which focuses on Aldie, Va., artist and quilter Rose Rushbrooke. HGTV is distributed in 80 million households nation wide. Rushbrooke is an expert in using computer-generated fractals as a basis for her unique art quilts. The show will focus on how she makes "fractal quilts."
A fractal is a mathematical term. Rushbrooke describes a fractal design as "same or similar features constantly repeated at different scales."
Rushbrooke's unusual quilts reflect the fact that artists are becoming more willing to experiment with blending their artistic skills and imagination with products now available via a computer. Rushbrooke's fractal designs vary and range from angular to goofy/Dr. Seussy spirals, and some resemble an amoeba or a Rorschach test.
Says Rushbrooke, "Sometimes there is a barrier of diffidence when approaching a piece of art. We are not always sure what we are looking at. Fractal art quilts go a long way to breaking down that first moment of uncertainty. The strange, complex images combined with the sensuous substance of a quilt are very compelling."
To employ and deploy fractals, Rose depends on her computer, printer, sense of color and fabric combinations, imagination, knowledge of quilting steps, and skill with a needle --combining contemporary tools and design with a traditional craft. Features that she works into many of her designs are hand-dyed fabrics, embroidery, trapunto, beads, floss, appliqué, couching and other fabric manipulation.
Her fractal art quilts have garnered cash and other recognition in quite a few shows. Her creation, "Summer Haze, a.k.a. Volcanic Pizza," was chosen by a jury as one of 25 quilts - out of hundreds of applicants - for exhibit in the high-profile Knitting and Stitching Show in 2002.
This show was "very important," she says; "it's the equivalent of America's (biannual) 'Quilt National'."
Rushbrooke's quilts vary greatly in size - from tiny to seven feet wide. Her work, list of credentials and exhibit listings can be viewed on the Web at www.roserushbrooke.com. She lectures on the topic of quilting and designing fractals for textiles and can be reached at 703-327-2482. She is working on a book on the topic, in fact.
Rose Rushbrooke is represented by Rendezvous Gallery (www.rendezvousstyle.com), The Byrne Gallery in Middleburg and Sage Moon Gallery in Charlottesville, Va. In October, at the Sage Moon, Rushbrooke and a water colorist will have a joint showing of their fractal designs.
