April is "Art/Math/Art" Month at Round Hill Arts Center!
Round Hill, VA - During the month of April, the gallery at Round Hill Arts Center presents "Art/Math/Art", an exhibit that explores the relationship between art and mathematics. Artists Rose Rushbrooke and Judith Townsend have bridged the two disciplines in a way that inspires the mind and delights the eye through the use of fractal geometry.

Geometry in nature can be found in the spiral of a nautilus shell, the pattern of seed distribution in the sunflower and pinecone, the skin of a pineapple, salt crystals and snowflakes. Fractal geometry is an exciting new discovery arising out of chaos theory. Random patterns in nature present a repeating structure at progressively smaller and smaller scales. This can be seen in the branching of trees and the nervous system, or the swirl of rising smoke and flowing water.

Judith Townsend and Rose Rushbrooke's work springs from exploring organic and fractal geometry. Natural patterns flow in watercolour shapes in Townsend's pieces. Rushbrooke takes the essential fractal design and simplifies the utterly modern patterns into fabric wall hangings with vibrant colors and intricate stichwork. Both artists pose questions about the creative process and the nature of mathmatics. Their work begs the questions: Is mathematics a discovery or an invention?

The exhibit runs April 5-28; an artists reception will be held Saturday, April 14th from 2-4pm. Gallery hours are Wed-Fri 10-5 and Sat. 11-5. For more information, call (540) 338-5050.
