How To Get An Audience To Raise Their Hands
by Sean D'Souza of 5000bc.com
If you've ever given a speech, from time to time, you need the audience to raise their hands when you ask a question. Now imagine you've asked the question and you ask for a show of hands.
And no hands come up.
Oooh. Makes you look pretty dumb, doesn't it?
So how do you get the audience to raise their hands not once, twice but several times in the course of a speech?
It's simple. You raise your hand. As you're asking the audience to raise their hands, you slowly raise your own hand. And like magic, you'll see the audience raising their own hands.
This raising hands business may seem pretty dumb
but it's important when you're speaking. Audiences tire quickly and just about the only thing they can do is write, shake their heads and raise their hands (if they're not playing footsie, that is). So raising hands allows for a certain level of participation. And more importantly, keeps the audience awake.
Try it the next time you're at an event. Raise your hand when you ask for a show of hands. And watch as the hands rise up like magic.
